Models of Shell Dwellings with Metal Plates

Aluminum plates on the exterior of the studio.

Six months after painting the stuccoed shell dwellings, their appearance — paint a cosmetic — became unacceptable. Looking for a better solution, I envisioned the shells clad like armadillos with jointed armor plates. The arrangement of plates shown in the models reanimated the sculptured surface and, ready to proceed, I settled for it.

An inquiry as to the cost of the sheet metal, the fabrication of the plates, and the means of anchoring them to the existing surface is underway.

Update

54 sheets of .032" 5052 H-32 aluminum, cut by Waterjet into curved plates with holes pre-drilled, will be used to cover the shell dwellings. Aluminum has been chosen mainly for cost, durability, and low maintenance. Regular metal roof screws, 3 inches long, will be used to fasten the plates to existing stucco surfaces.

Fabrication of plates is underway and, weather permitting, installation will start in late January 2005.
